Back in late 2020, I wanted to mess around with designing a mini EDC balisong. I simply took the Sentinel CAD model, shortened it, added the experimental pin shield system, and decided to prototype it. I told myself I wouldn’t care about how well it flipped. I just wanted to make a high-quality EDC balisong. At the time, mini balisongs were not super popular. The community shared this collective idea that small balisongs could not flip well. And even if you somehow pulled it off, it would never compare to a full-sized balisong. Once I had the prototype in my hands, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it flipped considering its size. It was a fun flipper for sure, but it obviously didn’t compare to its full-sized counterpart. And because of the aforementioned stigma that surrounded mini balisongs, I decided to tuck the prototype away, and I moved on.

Four years later, I decided to crack open the Jimpy Vault and unveil all of my experimental balisong designs on my Instagram. One of these designs was the Zentinel Mini. Out of all of the concepts that I shared, this was the one that took the community by storm. I was blown away by how many people wanted to see the Zentinel Mini become a reality. During Blade Show 2024, many people got to try out the original prototype. The look on every person’s face after flipping it was truly priceless. No one could believe how well it performed for being such a small balisong. This was when I knew I had something special. Needless to say, I was wrong. I really thought the design had no chance of ever getting a full release. But here we are. The Zentinel Mini is officially a thing.

The Zentinel Mini continues the legacy of the Sentinel; my first balisong design. Only this time, it’s fun-sized! I wanted to treat the Zentinel Mini builds with the same level of care and respect as my full-sized balisongs. Channel 6AL-4V titanium handle construction, hand tuned bushings/washers, and laser engraved serialization/build info on the blade. The whole shabang! Everything you know and love about a Jimpy Designs balisong remains intact.

The main goal with the Zentinel Mini was to make a mini EDC balisong, and that has not changed. I decided to use CPM MagnaCut for the blade steel due to its good edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness. The Zentinel Mini is about the same size as the BM 32 Mini Morpho, which I found to be the Goldilocks sweet spot. Not too big, and not too small. It doesn’t take up too much space in the pocket, but it’s big enough to use for normal everyday cutting tasks. You may have noticed that the Zentinel Mini has no latch. I did not want to compromise the inherently limited flipping performance you get with a mini balisong. For the best carry experience, I strongly recommend using a Bali Buckle or a small sheath. Personally, I find the Zentinel Mini and the Bali Buckle go together like peanut butter and jelly. But, you can carry it however you’d like.

Overall, I believe the Zentinel Mini breathes some much needed fresh air into the balisong community. A mini balisong that is also a surprisingly fun flipper is such a nice change of pace in my opinion. We seriously needed something new and exciting after years of what feels like the same rehashed concepts. I hope to inspire other makers to try new things to bring the community one step closer to the days of the “Balisong Renaissance”. If you are looking to try a mini balisong for EDC or just want something fun to flip when your full-sized balisongs get boring, the Zentinel Mini may just be what you’re looking for.

Each order includes:

  • (1) Zentinel Mini

  • (1) Carrying Case

  • (1) Stress Ball

  • Stickers

Difference Between Grade A & Grade B:

  • Grade A Zentinel Mini These are as close to perfect as possible from “factory”. Practically no cosmetic imperfections. These are listed at full price.

  • Grade B Zentinel Mini These may show minor scratches/blemishes/inconsistencies on the blade, handles, or both. Overall, Grade B Zentinel Minis still flip great, have a great tune, and have a very clean finish but are not able to be classified as near perfect like a Grade A Zentinel Mini. The price reflects said deviations in quality.

  • Grade C Zentinel Mini These may show noticeable scratches/blemishes/inconsistencies on the blade, handles, or both. Overall, Grade C Zentinel Minis still flip great, have a great tune, and have a clean finish. The price reflects said deviations in quality.

———————————————————————————————————

PLEASE NOTE:

Just like anything in life, nothing is truly perfect. This fact of life also applies to the Zentinel Mini. Some may have minuscule blemishes or inconsistencies even after careful inspection and hand finishing. Keep in mind, the Zentinel Mini was designed to be flipped, used, and enjoyed. Once you start using it, it’s going to get dinged, dropped, smacked, and battle worn anyway. You may find a tiny scratch or two. You may also find the machining is not truly 100% perfect. Even though we all strive for/expect literal perfection, once again, nothing is truly perfect.
